The prospect of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education is alarming, as it is for many others. The Detroit Free Press, Politico and other articles were illuminating. It’s not just that DeVos is:
- Unqualified – not an educator
- A lobbyist for for-profit charter schools
- 20 year history in Michigan of providing SUB-STANDARD EDUCATION
- Believes that the church should be more involved with education and government
It’s the ramifications of what would happen if DeVos becomes a member of the Cabinet that concern me. If she succeeds to privatize our school systems and manages them as her family and cronies have in Michigan, we will be in a sad state. We should fear that the schools would experience the same fate as that state’s schools systems. The for-profit business badly managed school finances and hired unqualified teachers and administrators. High schoolers fared badly, the charter corporations didn’t.
Many families won’t be able to afford the better private schools. The new charter schools could very well yield kids not qualified to go to college, but also greater numbers of unskilled people. There could be fewer college graduates in the sciences, medicine, engineering, etc. Advances in science, medicine would decrease. Society would suffer from the lack of research and development. Even the arts would be affected. Usually, the first subjects to be cut from curriculums are the arts. Sadly, many people don’t realize that the arts provide a voice for children who don’t or can’t express themselves. It’s also a primal creative outlet.
DeVos charter schools could lead to greater income & class disparity. If that’s the case, it could very well lead to a glut of unemployed people and very, very cheap labor, similar to 3rd World countries. Businesses that need unskilled, cheap labor would benefit from such a large labor pool. That populace would be desperate for work and income. I know it’s a stretch, but it could happen, America could transform into a 3rd World country.
