The Hidden Risks of Entrusting a Child to a Charter School

Someone I know and care about has just received a very rude awakening about the realities of charter school education. Though a white daughter of privilege, her life's path led her to seek a life centered upon human diversity and acceptance. Thus, her own daughter became a student, at a Spanish language immersion charter school, created and led by a visionary and gifted African-American educator. That is when the reality of charter school education, as it plays out too often, intruded into my friend's life, as explained in her post at the St. Louis American.
At the board meeting, the consulting firm hired to handle the transition was introduced: two old white guys. And now my prejudice is showing. I have had it with old white guys and the assumption that they are somehow inherently more suited to run things.

I want something different. I want our transformative, inspirational leader back – and I am not going to shut up about it. I am going to show up, speak up and not let the board forget what we want, because Rhonda’s dream is a fantastic part of the success that St. Louis has the opportunity to be.

That's right, brothers and sisters. This wonderful child of these terrific people had her education thrown into a whirlwind of uncertainty at the dictatorial whim of a charter schools corporate overlords. Just another casualty of capitalism. You know, because Freedumbz.
